تعريف المعلقات لغةً المعلقات لغةً من العلق وهي جمع معلّق، واسم فاعل من علَّقَ الشيء، وجذرها علق وجذعها معلق، ومشتق من الفعل علَّقَ،[١] ويُقال كل شاة برجلها معلَّقة أيّ كل شخص محاسب على عمله،[٢] والمُعلّقات جمع مؤنث سالم.[٣]
تعريف المعلقات اصطلاحًا أما المعلقات اصطلاحًا؛ هي عبارة عن قصائد العرب من المطولات، والتي بلغت شهرتها في عصرها، وانتشرت بين القوم لبلاغتها الأدبية، وقيمتها اللغوية العظيمة، حيث برزت خصائص الشعر الجاهلي فيها بشكل واضح، كما أنّها سُمّيت بالمعلقات؛ لأنّها كُتبت بالذهب على قماش الحرير، وعُلّقت على أستار الكعبة قبل الإسلام
في أقوال أُخرى قيل إنّها سُمّيت بالمعلقات لعلوقها بأذهان الناس، وقد اختلف الرواة في عدد المعلقات، حيث قال البعض أنّها سبع، والبعض الآخر جعلها عشرة، كما أنّ للمعلقات أسماء عديدة، ومنها: (السبع الطوال، المعلقات السبع، المشهورات، المذهّبات، المعلقات
العشر، السُّموط، السبعيات، القصائد السبع الطوال الجاهليات)
نماذج من المعلقات
ذُكر بأنّ الرواة اختلفوا في عدد المعلقات، فقد جاء عن الإمام أبو عبد الله الزوزني أنّ المعلقات سبع، وفي رواية عن أحمد بن الأمين الشنقيطي أنّها عشر معلقات، ومطلع من هذه المعلقات فيما يأتي:[٤] معلقة امرئ القيس مطلع معلقة امرؤ القيس فيما يأتي:[٥] قِفَا نَبْكِ مِنْ ذِكْرَى حَبِيْبٍ وَمَنْزِلِ بِسِقْطِ اللِّوَى بَيْنَ الدَّخُولِ فَحَوْمَلِ فَتُوْضِحَ فَالمِقْرَاةِ لم يَعْفُ رَسْمُهَا لِمَا نَسَجَتْهَا مِنْ جَنُوبٍ وَشَمْأَلِ معلقة طرفة بن العبد مطلع معلقة طرفة بن العبد فيما يأتي:[٦] لِخَولَةَ أَطلالٌ بِبُرقَةِ ثَهمَدِ تَلوحُ كَباقي الوَشمِ في ظاهِرِ اليَدِ وُقوفًا بِها صَحبي عَلَيَّ مَطيَّهُم يَقولونَ لا تَهلِك أَسىً وَتَجَلَّدِ معلقة زهير بن أبي سلمى مطلع معلقة زهير بن أبي سلمى فيما يأتي:[٧] أَمِن أُمِّ أَوفى دِمنَةٌ لَم تَكَلَّمِ بِحَومانَةِ الدُرّاجِ فَالمُتَثَلَّمِ وَدارٌ لَها بِالرَقمَتَينِ كَأَنَّها مَراجِعُ وَشمٍ في نَواشِرِ مِعصَمِ معلقة لبيد بن ربيعة مطلع معلقة لبيد بن ربيعة فيما يأتي:[٨] عَفَتِ الدِيارُ مَحَلُّها فَمُقامُها بِمَنىً تَأَبَّدَ غَولُها فَرِجامُها فَمَدافِعُ الرَيّانِ عُرِّيَ رَسمُها خَلَقاً كَما ضَمِنَ الوُحِيَّ سِلامُها معلقة عمرو بن كلثوم مطلع معلقة عمرو بن كلثوم فيما يأتي:[٩] أَلا هُبّي بِصَحنِكِ فَاَصبَحين وَلا تُبقي خُمورَ الأَندَرينا مُشَعشَعَةً كَأَنَّ الحُصَّ فيه إِذا ما الماءُ خالَطَها سَخينا معلقة عنترة بن شداد مطلع معلقة عنترة بن شداد فيما يأتي:[١٠] هَل غادَرَ الشُعَراءُ مِن مُتَرَدَّمِ أَم هَل عَرَفتَ الدارَ بَعدَ تَوَهُّمِ يا دارَ عَبلَةَ بِالجَواءِ تَكَلَّمي وَعَمي صَباحًا دارَ عَبلَةَ وَاِسلَمي معلقة الحارث بن حلزة مطلع معلقة الحارث بن حلزة اليشكري فيما يأتي:[١١] آَذَنَتنا بِبَينِها أَسماءُ رُبَّ ثاوٍ يُمَلُّ مِنهُ الثَواءُ آَذَنَتنا بِبَينِها ثُمَّ وَلَّت لَيتَ شِعري مَتى يَكونُ اللِقاءُ معلقة الأعشى مطلع معلقة الأعشى ميمون فيما يأتي:[١٢] وَدِّع هُرَيرَةَ إِنَّ الرَكبَ مُرتَحِلُ وَهَل تُطيقُ وَداعًا أَيُّها الرَجُلُ غَرّاءُ فَرعاءُ مَصقولٌ عَوارِضُها تَمشي الهُوَينا كَما يَمشي الوَجي الوَحِلُ معلقة النابغة الذبياني مطلع معلقة النابغة الذبياني فيما يأتي:[١٣] يا دارَ مَيَّةَ بِالعَلياءِ فَالسَنَدِ أَقوَت وَطالَ عَلَيها سالِفُ الأَبَدِ وَقَفتُ فيها أُصَيلاناً أُسائِلُها عَيَّت جَوابًا وَما بِالرَبعِ مِن أَحَدِ معلقة عبيد بن الأبرص مطلع معلقة عبيد بن الأبرص فيما يأتي:[١٤] أَقفَرَ مِن أَهلِهِ مَلحوبُ فَالقُطَبِيّاتُ فَالذَنوبُ فَراكِسٌ فَثُعَيلِباتٌ فَذاتُ فِرقَينِ فَالقَليبُ

المعلقات قصائد عربية مشهورة استحسنها الناس وتناقلوها، وقيل إنها سميت معلقات لأنها كانت تعلق بالكعبة تقديرا لأهميتها.
ويختلف النقاد في تحديد القصائد التي احتلت هذه المنزلة فيراها بعضهم سبع قصائد، ويراها عشرًا.
والمعلقات السبع التي اشتهرت بهذا الاسم هي:

قفا نبكِ من ذِكرَى حبيبٍ ومنزلِ * بِسِقْطِ اللِّوَى بَيْنَ الدَّخُولِ فحَوْمَلِ
2 - معلقة طرفة بن العبد، ومطلعها:
لِخَوْلَةَ أطْلالٌ بِبُرْقَة ِ ثَهْمَدِ * تَلُوحُ كَباقِي الوَشْمِ في ظاهِرِ اليَدِ
3 معلقة زهير بن أبي سلمَى، ومطلعها:
أَمِنْ أُمِّ أَوْفَى دِمْنَةٌ لَمْ تَكَلَّمِ * بِحَوْمَانَةِ الدَّرَّاجِ فالمُتَثَلَّمِ
4 - معلقة لبيد بن ربيعة، ومطلعها:
عَفَتِ الدِّيارُ مَحَلُّهَا فَمُقَامُهَا * بِمِنًى تَأَبَّدَ غَوْلُهَا فَرِجَامُهَا
5 - معلقة عنترة بن شداد، ومطلعها:
هَلْ غادَرَ الشُّعَراءُ مِنْ مُتَرَدَّمِ * أَمْ هَلْ عَرَفْتَ الدّارَ بَعْدَ تَوَهُّمِ؟
6 - معلقة عمرو بن كلثوم، ومطلعها:
أَلاَ هُبِّي بِصَحْنِكِ، فَاصْبِحِينَا * وَلا تُبْقِي خُمُورَ الأَنْدَرِينَا
7 - معلقة الحارث بن حلزة اليشكري، ومطلعها:
آذَنَتْنَا بِبَيْنِهَا أسْماءُ * رُبَّ ثَاوٍ يُمَلُّ مِنْهُ الثَّواءُ
أما المعلقات العشر فهي هذه القصائد السبع وتُضاف إليها:
